AvH Support of Humboldt Kollegs

Initiatives of Humboldt Alumni to organize regional and interdisciplinary conferences (Humboldt Kollegs) may be supported financially by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The aim of a Kolleg is to strengthen regional and interdisciplinary networking of Humboldtians. The organizers are responsible for the content of the conference. Detailed information on the Kolleg program information may be found on the AvH website.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation seeks to enable Humboldtians in as many countries as possible to organize a Humboldt Kolleg in intervals of several years. The funds that are available to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to support Humboldt Kollegs therefore are tightly constrained, and only about half of all the qualified applications can be considered for support. The selection decision takes into account the interval from the last sponsorship of a Humboldt Kolleg with a similar group of participants in the respective country.

Organizing a Kolleg

Are you interested in organizing a Kolleg, but concerned about what’s involved? The focuses on identifying practical solutions to challenges that US Humboldtians may face in organizing a Kolleg in the United States. Part I provides a brief summary of the key characteristics of a Kolleg, and an overview of the application process and of the financial support provided by the AvH, should the application be approved. Part II then presents more detailed information on the mechanics of organizing a meeting, including budgeting, identifying and negotiating contracts with hotels or other venues, finding Humboldtians in your field, and advertising the event. Where appropriate, we identify areas in which American Friends can provide assistance, as well as other resources that you may find useful in organizing your Kolleg. The information contained herein is intended to supplement the extensive information provided by the Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Foundation on the AvH website.
