Johanna Jacobsen Kiciman (2003-04)
Johanna started her own labor support business January 2009, providing birth doula services to mothers and families in Seattle. She attends both hospital and home births, and is planning on pursuing nursing or midwifery. In 2007, Johanna received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, Program in Folklore and Folklife, for her dissertation entitled: “Boundary Breaking and Compliance: Will-Erich Peuckert and 20th Century German Volkskunde.” As a German Chancellor Fellow at the Universität Göttingen, she conducted archival and bibliographic research on Will-Erich Peuckert (1895-1969), a German Volkskundler (folklore scholar) who dabbled in witchcraft, studied German legends, and aimed to internationalize a discipline burdened by its national past. He is a key figure for understanding how the discipline of Volkskunde developed in post World War II Germany. She and her husband Emre live in Seattle with their daughter Ella. (7/16/09)
